This document provides a brief overview of the changes in your Mail*Link SMTP Gateway package.
For general information on the gateway, please read the printed documentation included with your Mail*Link SMTP 4.0 package. For more details on the new features, please see the “SMTP 4.1 Manual Addendum”.

System Requirements
Mail*Link SMTP 4.1 requires MacOS System 7.0 or later (we recommend 7.5.1 or later), MacTCP v2.0.6 (included) or Open Transport v1.1.1 or later, and a TCP/IP connection.
In addition, you must have an SMTP host account with an SMTP/POP host, such as a corporate mail host or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). With Version 4.1, this can be a 28.8 kpbs (or faster) dialup connection, via OT/PPP rather than a permanent network connection.
Some of the MIME enclosure handling options require QuickTime be installed on the server. If QuickTime is not installed, automatic conversion of PICT to GIF (and vice versa) for enclosures will not take place and an error message will appear in the log file.
Memory Issues
We recommend 12 MB of installed physical RAM (not virtual memory) if using MacTCP, or 16 MB if using Open Transport. You may be able to use less, but the specific amount depends on the applications and extensions that will also be executing on the server system.
For 68K systems, we do not recommend the use of virtual memory (or other RAM extending software). For PPC systems, we recommend that, if you use virtual memory, you should set it to 1MB more than the actual amount of physical memory.
If you increase the number of send or receive threads used by your daemon, you will need to increase the memory allocation even further.
Installing and Updating to Version 4.1
Open the folder that contains the SMTP gateway distribution or insert Disk 1
Double click on the Installer icon and press the “Install” button.
Follow the instructions
If you have any problems, please check the manual -- it has a whole section on installation.
WARNING: if you use this version to install a new SMTP gateway and you use OpenTransport/PPP, configure it to not connect on TCP open. If you forget to do this and start the daemon which causes OT/PPP to automatically connect, do not type in the Authorization Key -- press Cancel instead. Otherwise you may cause an Open Transport crash after dismissing the Easy Setup dialog (StarNine can’t work around this at this time).
Updating
After updating, start the smtp.daemon application and verify all of the preference settings.
Authorization keys
Mail*Link SMTP 4.1, like version 4.0 that uses the new Authorization Key technology. This software requires Authorization Keys (a sequence of letters/numbers that you type into a dialog box) for it to function properly, even if you currently have “hard keys” (Mail*Link Key files located in your “ADMIN” folder).
The first time the daemon is executed, it will display a dialog requesting an Authorization Key. Your authorization key is printed on the License Agreement included with this product. If you would like to order more keys for authorizing additional users, please contact our sales department at (800) 525-2581, Fax: (510) 649-4949, sales@starnine.com.
Updating from Version 3.x
• the old preference for “number of receivers” doesn’t map to the new options. Be sure to check the SMTP/TCP preferences pane and set the send/receive threads for your local requirements. If you open preferences without setting the threads, you may get an error alert, and the threads will be set to a default value.
• all old “key files” are valid and recognized (don’t throw them away), but only after an enabling Key has been entered in the Authorization dialog.
•the 4.1 release uses the previous size setting. In general, you should increase the size setting by 500K after initial installation of the upgrade.
Documentation
Version 4.1 includes a special Manual Addendum covering the new features, including support for Dialup Connections. Please check it before you contact Technical Support on these features.
Your SMTP 4 package includes full documentation, covering all aspects of the SMTP Gateways, including installation, configuration, all preferences, message and enclosure processing, administration, troubleshooting (including overflow processing) and more. Please refer to it as your guide for this product.
An electronic version in Adobe Acrobat format is available from the StarNine FTP server (ftp.starnine.com) in the /pub/docs directory. The URLs are:
• Dialup SMTP connection support, allowing you to use a relatively-inexpensive dialup connection to the SMTP host server, rather than a continual direct connection.
• Better AOL connections with new AOL name resolution.
• Open Transport MX record-caching option, which improves speed for gateways not using a default host
• Passes long messages (more than 32 K of text) to Quarterdeck Mail Version 4.0 or later in the body, rather than converted to attachments.
• Passes long QuickMail subject lines -- no longer truncated at 27 characters.
• MIME Subtypes Table allows periods
• Decodes binhexed multipart attachments.
• Now compatible with Netscape and GroupWise/SMTP forwarded messages using the MIME type “message/rfc822”.
Version 4.0 Features are covered in the manual and in the “3.x to 4.0 Upgrade Info” file.
